Duan Xiao Lou and Die Yi are junior fellow apprentices and they are also good friends in Beijing Opera Troupe. Die Yi acts as female role and Duan acts as male role. They often perform the opera. Bawang and Bieji, which is well known opera in Beijing City. Die Yi also regarded himself as Beiji in reality and Duan as Bawang. Later Duan marries with Ju Xian and therefore they often disagree with each other. During Cultural Revolution in China,  they are separated and Ju Xian kills herself since she hears that her husband has not loved her. After the Cultural Revolution, they meet with each other and they perform the opera Bawang and Bieji again.
